(Rating: 8.6/10 - 5383 votes)

Warner Brothers Suicide Squad movie is one of the most hotly anticipated comic book blockbusters of 2016. Even if you don’t know all the film’s anti-heroes by name and reputation, you have to admit that the trailers paint a pretty awesome picture of an off-center world where bright colors meet dark hearts and cynicism rules. But just how did we get to this point and who is the Suicide Squad?

The Suicide Squad movie seems to have come out of nowhere, but that’s not really the case. The name “Suicide Squad” actually dates back to the late 1950s and a DC series called “The Brave and the Bold.” Originally they were a group of fairly ordinary government agents whose job was to deal with extraordinary threats. The series never caught on with readers though and was retired after 6 entries.

In the mid-80s the Suicide Squad concept was resurrected in the form of “Task Force X” and given a new, more disturbed look and a new, morally ambiguous leader - Amanda Waller - who gazed upon the socially compromised and saw endless possibilities for plausible deniability.

The Task Force X series ended in 1992, but DC continued to mine the Suicide Squad vein by featuring them periodically in other properties like Superman. In 2014 they appeared in the straight-to-DVD “Batman: Assault on Arkham” at about the same time the Suicide Squad online rumour mill began to buzz about a live action movie.

Who's In The Suicide Squad?

The roll call of Suicide Squad characters has changed over time as some have died on the job, others won their freedom and others simply cycled through occasionally as featured trouble makers. In the upcoming film the Squad looks like this.

  • Killer Croc - Waylon Jones, aka Killer Croc, was born with reptile-like skin and other pretty horrific deformities. In time, he left an abusive home to pursue a life of crime with the goal of becoming Gotham’s crime kingpin.
  • Rick Flag - It’s not clear which Rick Flag we’ll be getting in the film since there are 3 generations of Rick Flags. Let’s assume it’s Rick Flag III. If so, he’ll be Amanda Waller’s eyes and ears on the ground and be the one calling the shots.
  • Deadshot - Deadshot will be played by Will Smith. In the movie, Deadshot apparently agrees to join the Suicide Squad so he can die a spectacular death. Suicide Squad represents a bit of a career risk for Smith and we’ll see how it plays out.
  • Harley Quinn - Let’s face it guys, the real reason you want to watch Suicide Squad is Margot Robbie’s portrayal of bad girl Harley Quinn, and who can blame you? Robbie’s Quinn relishes the infliction of pain and is a tireless, if dangerous, flirt (think Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill).
  • Captain Boomerang - Where others are at least willing to entertain the notion of doing the right thing in order to gain some reward, Boomerang doesn’t really see the point. To him it’s all the same: just another opportunity to mess somebody up.
  • Slipknot - Slipknot gained his moniker by way of his affinity for killing with rope. His nefarious resume caught the eye of Amanda Waller, who’s of the opinion that he has something of real value to bring to the group.
  • Katana - Katana is an expert martial artist with a convoluted past that includes a spurned lover and being a protégé of Batman for a time. While she’s flirted with darkness, she’s never really made the leap, so her exact role is unclear.
  • The Enchantress - The dusty female character you’ve seen lurking about the edges of Suicide Squad trailers is The Enchantress. She possesses extraordinary magical powers and it seems a pretty safe bet she’ll be a bit of a wild card.
  • El Diablo - The original El Diablo was a character out of the Old West infused with magical powers. In the film he’s a contemporary criminal named Chato Santana, who picks up the mantle of the Old West character along with his magical attributes.

What About the Joker?

As the Joker, Jared Leto looks like he’s determined to one-up Heath Ledger in the disturbed department. While the Joker’s known role in turning Harley Quinn to the dark side provides an excuse for his presence, it’s still not clear what part he plays in this narrative. Is he the enemy the Squad is assembled to defeat? Does he only appear in flashbacks? Is he more of an instigator? Suicide Squad online sources are mum on the issue. Guess we’ll have to watch Suicide Squad to find out.

And Where is the Batman?

He’s home, washing his tights! At least that’s what most people assumed until that blitz trailer hit that showed the Caped Crusader swooping into action both in person and in the form of the BVS Batmobile. These could be flashbacks having to do with the Joker, or the Dark Knight may be drawn into the fray because the not-quite-A-Team gets out of hand.

And What About Those Re-shoots?

Only days after the release of Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, word began to circulate that DC and Warners were stung by the negative reviews. The story goes that they decided emergency measures were called for to ‘lighten up’ SS in order for it to avoid being savaged by the same critics. However both the film’s director and Jai (Boomerang) Courtney have since surfaced to dispel those rumours. Several Suicide Squad online sources also state that the reshoots involve tens of millions of dollars and entire scenes which would seem to further confirm that there’s more going on than the infusion of a few jokes.

When you watch Suicide Squad you’ll be treated to an ensemble cast of several first-timers, several lesser-known actors and one superstar.

  • Will Smith — Deadshot
  • Jai Courtney — Captain Boomerang
  • Margot Robbie — Harley Quinn
  • Viola Davis — Amanda Wallace
  • Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje — Killer Croc
  • Cary Fukuhara —Katana
  • Adam Beach — Slipknot
  • Cara Delevingne — Enchantress
  • Joel Kinnaman — Rick Flag
  • Jay Hernandez — El Diablo
  • Jared Leto — The Joker
  • Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters in early August and the first trailers have set the bar of expectation pretty high (and not just because Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn looks like a bad girl to die for). The movie is DC’s third installment in their budding “expanded universe” and in some ways represents a significant gamble for the parent company, Warner Brothers. That’s because at this point you’d expect they’d still be setting up individual members of the expanded universe rather than going all-in with a largely unknown group property.

    The Will Smith Factor

The elephant in the room when talking about Suicide Squad is Will Smith. It will be interesting to see if he’s capable of working with an ensemble cast after being large and in charge for the better part of 20 years. The project seems like both a risk and something that’s absolutely necessary for him if he’s to refloat his career after it was torpedoed by his well-intentioned, but misguided attempts to turn his son into a star.

    Cautious but Hopeful

In spite of the fact that part of me wishes DC/Warners had taken their time getting to Suicide Squad, and in spite of the questions surrounding Smith’s involvement, I’m still hopeful for the Suicide Squad full movie for one big reason: Director David Ayers. Ayers’ 2014 Schwarzenegger vehicle “Sabotage” was (in my opinion) the Governator’s best film since the original Predator. A lot of the credit for that has to go to Ayers for treating Ahnuld as an actor, not a pop-culture icon. Perhaps Ayers can do the same with Smith.

I’m also not going to get bent out of shape about reports of extensive reshooting either. After all, Mad Max Fury Road went through literally years of delays and reshoots and wound up being the best movie of 2015. World War Z also underwent a complete rewriting and reshooting of its third act and the resulting movie, while not up to Fury Road standards, worked just fine for what it was. So reshoots happen. That’s life in Tinseltown.

I’m pocketing my expectations for Suicide Squad but not my hopes. I’ve been through the various trailers many times and, while I was never a fan of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the imagery looks promising and there are no obviously bad casting choices ala Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Whether you head to the multiplex or decide to stream Suicide Squad in the comfort of your home, here’s hoping it’s everything we comic book fans are looking for and then some.
